“What have the Romans given us in return?” – Eger 1.

“What have the Romans given us in return?” being in Eger this Monty Python quote might occur with a slight change “what have the Turks given us in return?”

… the longest novel (“Egri csillagok”/ “Eclipse of the Crescent  Moon”by Géza Gárdonyi)  that most Hungarian around the age of 10 read was about the siege of Eger (1552). The Hungarian victory over the Ottomans was something like the fight of David with Goliath. Although 44 years later the Turks captured the castle and stayed for another 91 years but what counts is 1552.

…  Egri Bikvér (Bull’s Blood), the name of the most prestigious red wine is about Turkish superstition and Hungarian virility.

… the bath house with its thermal water.

… the northernmost minaret (medieval time) of the world.

… coffee, coffee, coffee.

It is all true but Eger offers much more.
